They seem to be keeping it quiet, but Brita offer a recycling service on their cartridges. Here’s what I asked:

Wondering why you have no info about your cartridge
recycling scheme on your website. This seems like a great idea and something
you could benefit from advertising on the site.
I would be interested to know more about it, like how they are
recycled.

Cheers,

Marcus

Here’s their response:

The contents of the cartridge are recyclable. Many people are concerned
about the issue of waste and therefore return their used cartridges to us.
From here, the cartridges are returned to the Brita Head Office in Germany
where they are recycled.

The melted plastic is used in the industrial field and the carbon is
re-activated and can then be used in, for example, wastewater purification.
The ion exchange resin undergoes special regeneration treatment and is used
in an industrial capacity. If you would care to return the cartridges in
batches of 6 to the address below there is no charge for postage:-
