Musical Road September 21, 2008

The BBC has a story on how “a section of Avenue K in a Californian desert town uses grooves cut into the road surface to play the Lone Ranger theme to cars driving along it.”
It’s now been resurfaced as local residents weren’t so happy about the sounds going on all the time.

Here’s one of the originals in Japan:

And an ITN piece on them in Japan, including some shots of the grooves that make the sounds:

SAYNOTO0870.COM – Non-Geographical Alternative Telephone Numbers April 8, 2008

Filed under: Mixed bag — chilsta @ 11:33 am

0870 numbers are a rip off. Most of the time the companies are making money off you sitting there on hold, so there’s not much incentive to shorten queues and deal with you quicker. Help put an end to this by using an alternate, regular phone number. These should come out of inclusive minutes on your mobile or landline, unlike 0870 numbers. Just do a quick search on the site to find what you need:

Highway hi-fi – A turntable in your car April 13, 2007

Undaunted by the failure of its original Highway Hi-Fi, its promoter cooperated with one of America’s leading electronics firms in a project involving the application of a more conventional phonograph to automobiles. The new phonograph is a 45-rpm automatic record changer of special design (Fig. 911) to enable it to be used in the family car.

Rubber Band Limit Mod February 25, 2007

Rubber Band Limit Mod

Put a rubber band around the neck of pump bottles to limit the amount that comes out.

Handy when kids are involved as they tend to use as much of anything as they can (I know I used to when I was young anyway). You can always give it a couple of pumps if you need more than usual, although we find this gives just the right amount 99% of the time.

(We get a lot of post office rubber bands littering the pavements and paths of England. They were brown until a couple of years ago, when they were changed to red, apparently so the post persons could see them easier and not drop them all over the country. Evidently it’s made no difference.)

2nd in a series of reuse posts.

Tennis Speaker

First in a series of reuse posts. Use old tennis balls cut in half as vibration isolation for your speakers, one half in each corner. Cheaper than spikes or expensive stands and work just as well.

Squash balls are an another option and if you want to really take it to the max, put a marble plynth between the balls and the speakers.

If it’s good enough for DJ Premier and his turntables, it’s good enough for me.
