I use a lot of rechargable batteries, and forgetting to charge them or getting caught without a charger can be a real pain.

These clever people have come up with a good solution- use the ubiquitous USB socket as a power source and build the charger into the battery.

Peak Files September 13, 2006

Normally, whenever you open an audio file in an audio program that displays the waveform of the sound file for the first time, it creates a peak file.
This file mainly contains a graphical representation of the sound, which is displayed in most audio editing applications as a static wave. Each program has its own type of peak file, normally created alongside the audio file as soon as it’s opened in the application. Here’s a collection of peak files from a few such programs.

With big audio files (even files of short duration can become pretty big due to higher and higher sampling rates and bit depths being used in professional and home recording set-ups alike) there is a huge amount of hard drive and backup space being wasted due to the fact that there can be many of these peak files saved for a single audio file, each essentially replicating the same information.

I don’t know, but I don’t see any reason why the data held in these files needs to be specific for each application. Wouldn’t it be better to develop a standard file format for them? This new peak format would have room for custom header fields which could hold any required proprietory information, other applications would just ignore the custom fields and just use what they need.

This would also speed up the opening of audio files that had previously been opened in other applications when opened in a new application for the first time, as the peak file would already be there for the new application rather than it needing to create the peak file in order to display its waveform.
