The table of equivalents / replacements / analogs of Windows software in Linux

Filed under: Mixed bag — chilsta @ 5:46 pm

Just found Linux RSP’s list of Linux software.

“One of the biggest difficulties in migrating from Windows to Linux is the lack of knowledge about comparable software. Newbies usually search for Linux analogs of Windows software, and advanced Linux-users cannot answer their questions since they often don’t know too much about Windows :). This list of Linux equivalents / replacements / analogs of Windows software is based on our own experience and on the information obtained from the visitors of this page.”

Migration to Linux- Step 1

Filed under: Mixed bag — chilsta @ 5:43 pm

This weekend was a kind of milestone for me. I finally used up the partition I’d set aside for Linux with a install of Redhat Shrike. The installation was painless- the thing that took me the longest was going through the list of options of what I did and didn’t want installed. I could have just chosen the typical desktop installation and been done with it, but when I’m offered a load of stuff, I want to see what it is, and as it turned out the install had a massive range of options that could be installed, so I went through and grabbed any that seemed relevent (which was quite a lot!).

So it installed without a problem, GRUB is defaulting to Windows, and will also let me choose a regular or dual processor version of the software (as I’ve installed it on my main SMP machine).

Time was running short, and once installed I got a nice flashing cursor and not much else. I tried to fire up one of the installed graphical desktop environments (KME?), but just typing its name didn’t work, which is where I gave up, for now.

Rising Early May 26, 2005

Those who know me might have almost/ just fallen off/out of their chairs, but you never know, Steve Pavliva’s post on early rising might be worth a go one day… though maybe not to the extremes that he prefers.

Del.icio.us collection

Filed under: Mixed bag — chilsta @ 5:48 pm

del.icio.us is a social bookmarks manager. It allows you to easily post sites you like to your personal collection of links, to categorize those sites with keywords, and to share your collection not only between your own browsers and machines, but also with others.

More info and a pretty exhaustive collection of links here.

Specially useful, and what I’d been looking for is this tool for exporting your Firefox bookmarks into del.icio.us

Get fonkay with your laces

Filed under: Mixed bag — chilsta @ 4:31 pm

Tired of that same old lacing method you’ve been using since you first learned to lace a shoe? Or worse, are you using the embarrasing lace up that the shoe shop did, you know- where one side of the string goes straight from the bottom to the top and your laces end up different lengths after a few day’s use…?

Then you need to know 23 Different Ways To Lace Shoes.

EasyPHP May 25, 2005

Filed under: Joomla! — chilsta @ 5:42 pm

Firstly I tried using the MamboSAS (Stand Alone Server) from Mambo Solutions. But that just didn’t want to behave itself. So I went off on a hunt to find an alternative. There are many WAMP (Windows Apache MySQL PHP) solutions around, but they were all far too heavy for what I needed.

EasyPHP was about perfect- super easy installation and it just ran without any setup.

This part from the FAQ on changing the default web server root folder helped me with endless folder navigations:

How can I change the “www” directory’s location ?
You need to change the configuration fle of Apache (httpd.conf). Just update the path for DocumentRoot. For example:
DocumentRoot “C:/MyWebSite” (Line 82)
(Line 91)
(line numbers may vary)

As a bonus you get to practice your French along the way ;)

Dj Food’s “Raiding the 20th Century” May 19, 2005

Filed under: Music — chilsta @ 9:28 pm

Managed to miss this, even though it’s been around for almost a year and a half. I’m downloading the torrent (very slowly) now.

Also worth mentioning Paul Morley’s book “Words and Music“. In case DJ Food‘s info page dissappears.
